What a Dungeon Run Is Worth

The coin on the corpses pays for the repair afterwards and not much else. The money is in what you are allowed to sell, and that turns out to be the part players fight about.

Where the value actually sits

A levelling dungeon produces 4 kinds of value, and they are not equal:

  • Coin. Predictable, small, and mostly consumed by repairs and reagents on the way out.
  • Materials. Cloth above all, plus whatever the skinners in the group take off the corpses. Unglamorous and reliable.
  • Recipes and blueprints. The scarce end of crafting comes from bosses, which is new in Forever and makes a dungeon a supply line rather than a detour.
  • Bind-on-equip drops. The only items that can be sold to a stranger, and therefore the only ones with a real price.

Everything else you loot is yours forever whether you want it or not. The bind-on-equip drop is the one piece of a run that converts into gold at market rate, which is why it carries all the social weight.

The argument about Need

There is a proposal on the official Forever forum to make a bind-on-equip item soulbound the moment somebody rolls Need on it. The reasoning is straightforward: rolling Need is supposed to mean I will wear this, and at the moment it can also mean I will sell this, with no way for the group to tell which.

The reply that gives the thread its shape is not about greed at all: need for gold to buy next abilities.Player, official Forever forum

That is the whole economy of levelling in 6 words. The person rolling Need on a sellable item is often not a profiteer; they are somebody who cannot afford their next rank of a spell. Both sides of the argument are describing the same shortage from opposite ends.

Nothing about loot rules has been announced. This is a request players are making, and we are reporting it as one.

The bill nobody budgets for

Abilities cost money. Every few levels the class trainer wants paying for the next rank, and that expense arrives on a schedule regardless of whether the last 3 dungeons dropped anything worth selling. It is the most reliable drain on a levelling character and the least discussed.

It is also why the standard advice to "just save for riding" is incomplete. Riding is the large bill at 40, but the training bill is the steady one before it, and the two compete for the same coin. A character that spends everything on spell ranks arrives at 40 with nothing banked; a character that banks everything arrives with a mount and yesterday's abilities.

We do not have Forever's trainer prices and we are not going to invent them. What is worth knowing now is the shape: this is a recurring cost with no upper bound in sight, and it is the reason a group of 5 levelling players will argue over 1 sellable drop.

Questions

Do you make gold running dungeons in Forever?

Some, and most of it is not the coin on the corpses. It is the items that can be sold on: the bind-on-equip drops, the cloth, the recipes. The silver that drops directly barely covers repairs.

What is a BoE and why does it cause arguments?

Bind on equip: an item that can be traded or auctioned until somebody puts it on. It is the most valuable thing a levelling dungeon produces, which is exactly why players argue about who is allowed to roll Need on it.

There is a live proposal on the official forum to bind such items the moment Need is rolled, so they cannot be taken for resale. Nothing has been announced; it is a request, not a change.

Why do I keep running out of gold while levelling?

Because abilities are not free. Every few levels a trainer wants paying, and that bill arrives whether or not you found anything worth selling. It is the single most common reason a levelling character is broke, and it is the reason the BoE argument gets heated — one player's resale is another player's training fee.
