Guide - moving gold between players

How Gold Moves Between Players

Every coin in Forever is picked up by somebody. This is the short list of ways one can then end up in another player's bag, the lines a hand-over cannot cross, and the parts of it Blizzard has not described at all.

The 4 ways a coin changes hands

There are only a handful of ways a coin leaves one bag and arrives in another, and none of them is new. The trade window needs both characters standing in the same place, with both sides clicking accept. Mail carries gold attached to a letter, so the other player does not have to be online. Cash on delivery turns the same letter into a sale: the item travels first and only opens once the amount written on it is paid. A buyout on the auction house does the same thing with a counter in between.

None of those 4 creates a coin or destroys one. That is the part worth holding on to, because it is what separates a transfer from the faucets and sinks that decide how much gold exists in the world. Your balance moves, the other player's balance moves the other way, and the total sits exactly where it was. The game agrees with the split: auction proceeds are counted apart from looted gold in the statistics panel's income lines, and nothing in that panel measures a world total at all.

The guild bank is the obvious fifth channel and the one we cannot describe. Nothing has been published about how guild banks work in Forever, including whether a gold tab exists, who is allowed to withdraw, and whether withdrawals are limited per day. Treat it as unannounced rather than as the version you remember from a previous client.

The lines a transfer cannot cross

A hand-over has to clear 3 lines before the mechanics matter, and all 3 are settled at character creation rather than at the moment of the trade. Faction is the hard one: mail and trade are same-faction only, exactly as they were in 2004. The Skyborne being playable on both sides changes who can hold a conversation, not who can hand over money, and nothing said so far attaches trade or mail to the shared language.

Region is the second line. One mega-server for the Americas, one for Europe, one for Asia, with no movement between them described anywhere. Playstyle is the third, and it is the one people forget: Normal, PvP and Roleplay are separate ecosystems. Those separate markets per playstyle are also separate pools of players for the purpose of handing anything over, which is why a quote taken from one of them describes a different market entirely.

Then there is the character. Gold sits on a character rather than on an account, and account-wide gold is a request players keep making on the forum rather than something announced. Moving your own money between your own characters is the same mail or the same trade as moving it to a stranger, and the same 3 lines apply to it.

Who the gold came from is not written on the coin

A video and then a forum thread have spent 2 days on the same question: what it means when the gold in your bag was earned by somebody else. Strip the argument back and the mechanical part is simple. The trade window does not ask why, and neither does the mail. A guildmate paying for ore, a friend covering riding training and a stranger delivering a purchase all produce the same entry in the same counter, and nothing in the client marks one of them as different from the other 2.

What has been published is narrow, and it is worth reading in the original rather than in summary. Blizzard has said it intends to enforce harder against real-money trading in Forever, and it has described reclaiming laundered gold when it is found. The wording of Blizzard's stated RMT policy and the separate argument over what happens to a buyer's balance are both shorter than the threads written about them.

What has not been published is how an ordinary gift between 2 players is read, or whether anything in a transfer itself is examined rather than the accounts at either end. We have not seen a statement on it, so we are not going to invent one. If the hand-over is coming from somebody you do not know, the question with an actual answer is the one about the other end of it: who is advertising in trade chat can be checked, and a coin in a trade window cannot.

What has not been published about transfers

The blanks here are bigger than the confirmed part, and most of them are rates rather than rules. Nothing has been said about whether trade or mail carries a cap on the gold attached, what postage costs, whether cash on delivery has a ceiling, or how long a letter takes to arrive. The auction house is unannounced in its entirety, which includes the cut taken on a sale and the deposit lost when a listing does not sell, so the 2 fees that quietly shrink a transfer are both unknown numbers.

The one date that is settled is the wipe. Gold held on a beta character goes with the character, so nothing handed over on the test client reaches 4 November, and gold bought during the beta is the clearest case of a transfer that buys nothing at all. Check the rest on your own character once the live client is up: a mail fee or a trade cap usually appears in a tooltip long before it appears in a patch note, and a guide written against the old client is describing a different set of numbers.

Questions

Can I send gold to a character on the other faction?

No mechanism for it has been described. Mail and trade are same-faction only, the way they have always been in this version of the game, and the shared Skyborne language is a chat feature rather than a trade one. If both ends of a hand-over are not on the same faction, in the same region and in the same playstyle, there is no published route between them.

Does buying something on the auction house count as a transfer?

Yes, and it is the one most people never think of as one. A buyout takes gold out of the buyer's bag and puts it in the seller's, with a cut removed on the way, so the coins move sideways and the world total does not change. The size of that cut and the deposit on an unsold listing have not been published for Forever, so treat both as unknown rather than as the percentages you remember.

Can I move gold between my own characters?

By the same mail or the same trade as anyone else, and under the same faction, region and playstyle limits. Gold is held per character, and account-wide gold is something players have been asking for rather than something announced. Nothing has been published about whether mail between your own characters behaves differently from mail to a stranger, including delivery time.

Does any of this create gold in the world?

No. Trade, mail, cash on delivery and auction buyouts all move coins that already exist. Gold is created when a mob is looted, a quest is turned in or an item is sold to a vendor, and it is destroyed by repairs, trainers, riding training and other vendor purchases. A transfer sits between those 2 flows and touches neither of them.
