What the Legendary Questline Costs to Run
A datamine of the client describes a legendary questline with 3 versions of the item and a route through Moonglade, Un'Goro Crater and Hyjal. It names no price at any step. That does not make the run free, and this is an attempt to separate what the files say from what the evenings will cost you.
What the datamine actually names
The strings come out of the client rather than out of a patch note, and a Russian-language thread pulled them into a readable order. What they describe is a questline ending in a legendary item that exists in 3 versions, and a route that moves between zones instead of sitting in one.
The shape, as the files have it: an opening tied to a ritual of Elune in Moonglade, solo challenges set in Un'Goro Crater, a named boss called Sylvestra Twilightsong, and a final step attached to Hyjal. Hyjal Summit is one of the raids that opens on December 9, so the last stage of this chain lands in content a guild is already running for other reasons.
What the files do not carry is a bill. No gold requirement appears at any stage, no reagent list, no vendor cost, no repeatable fee. Anything quoting a total for this questline is quoting a figure that does not exist in the data, and we are not going to invent one to fill the gap.
A legendary is not bought. The run at it is paid for.
This is the distinction worth holding on to. The item arrives from finishing steps, so no listing and no seller stands between you and it. In a world with how the Forever economy works built on player-made coin only, that is unusual: most expensive things in the game are expensive because somebody prices them, and this one is expensive in hours instead.
The hours still convert into money. Solo challenges are the clearest case, because a challenge you fail is a challenge you repeat: repairs after each attempt, buff food and potions before each one, and possibly a talent change if the fight punishes the build you level with. None of that is charged by the questline. All of it is charged by the game around it.
Then there is distance. Moonglade, Un'Goro Crater and Hyjal do not sit next to one another, and a chain that sends you back and forth turns travel into the quiet majority of the bill. Time on the road is the reason training the top riding tier belongs in the same budget as the flasks, even though it has nothing to do with the questline on paper.
Where the coin actually goes
Broken into the categories you can plan for, none of which the datamine mentions and all of which have existed in every version of the game:
- Consumables for the solo stages. Food, potions and whatever your class burns through on a fight built to be attempted more than once. This is the single line that scales with how many tries you need.
- Repairs. A solo challenge is a fight you are expected to lose sometimes. Losing costs durability, and durability is a sink that never stops.
- Travel. Riding, flight paths and the dead time between 3 separate regions. Cheap per trip, heavy over a full chain.
- Gear to pass the wall. If a stage checks your damage or your survivability, the answer is usually a crafted item or an enchant bought from somebody else — which is where professions and the supply side price this questline without ever appearing in it.
- The raid week. If the final step really does sit inside Hyjal Summit, its cost is the ordinary consumable bill of raiding, shared with everyone else clearing the same instance.
None of these are new sinks. They are the existing ones, pointed at a single goal, which is why we keep every confirmed gold sink in one list rather than writing a separate budget for each piece of content.
The practical version: if you are already running the staged gold-making plan, a legendary chain does not change the plan. It changes what the reserve is for, and it front-loads consumable demand for anyone attempting the solo stages in the same weeks their guild is raiding.
What is not known, stated plainly
The list of blanks here is longer than the list of facts, and the blanks are the parts people most want filled.
- Whether the 3 versions of the item are upgrade tiers, role alternatives or class-specific results. The files name them; they do not rank them.
- Whether any stage carries a material or gold requirement that simply has not been written into the strings yet.
- Whether the solo challenges can be retried freely, or sit behind a lockout that turns every attempt into a week.
- Whether any part of the chain produces something tradeable, which is the only way this questline could touch the auction house directly.
- Whether the datamined version ships at all. Client strings are drafts, and drafts get cut.
One piece of context that is published rather than datamined: a legendary questline appears on the Spring 2027 slot of the content roadmap, alongside 2 raids, 2 dungeons and a PvP refresh. Whether that entry and these strings describe the same thing is an assumption, not a confirmation, and we are treating it as an assumption.
Our reading: the useful preparation is boring and it works either way. Materials for consumables, a repair buffer, and the riding tier you were saving for regardless. If the chain lands as described, none of that is wasted; if it lands differently, you still hold stock for the raid nights that pay for themselves.
Questions
Can the legendary item be bought from another player?
No. Everything the datamine describes is a questline completed by the character doing it, which means the item comes from finishing steps rather than from a listing. Gold only touches the attempts around it — consumables, repairs and travel — not the reward itself.
Does the datamine list a gold or reagent cost?
It does not. There is no requirement of that kind at any stage in the strings, which is why this write-up gives categories of spending rather than a total. A figure would have to be made up, and we would rather leave the blank visible.
Is the questline live right now?
The stages described here come from client files, not from a live chain anyone has completed. The published roadmap places a legendary questline in the Spring 2027 slot, and whether that entry matches these strings is an assumption on our part.
What should I actually put aside for it?
The same reserve you would build for raid nights: consumable materials, a repair buffer and the riding training that cuts the travel between Moonglade, Un'Goro Crater and Hyjal. All 3 hold their value whether or not the chain ships in the form the files describe.
