What Your Race Costs and Earns in Forever
A race is picked once and never changed, and in Forever it is one of the few permanent decisions that touches money on both sides of the ledger. This is what the racials do to a gathering route, what they do not do to the riding bill, and what a starting city quietly charges you.
Which racials actually touch money
Forever hands every character a gathering profession on a quest around level 3 or 4, so the profession is no longer what decides whether you can supply the market. The race is. It is chosen once, it cannot be swapped later, and 5 racials in the current list touch income or expense rather than combat. None of them is large on its own, and nobody has published what any of them returns per hour, so the useful question is not which race earns most but which side of the ledger each bonus sits on.
- Cultivation (Tauren) grows a duplicate of a nearby herb, and the duplicate can be picked with no Herbalism skill at all. Each plant can be cultivated once.
- Find Treasure (Dwarf) tracks treasure and runs alongside other tracking, so it no longer costs the herb or mineral slot.
- Skysight (Skyborne, Horde) gives 10% run speed; Quickness (Night Elf) gives 2%.
- Plainsrunning (Tauren) builds speed the longer you keep moving.
- Engineering Specialization (Gnome) makes engineering devices more reliable.
Read as a ledger, 2 of those add to what you collect and 3 subtract from what you spend. Cultivation produces a herb that needed no profession, and Find Treasure opens chests you would otherwise have given up a tracking slot to notice. The speed racials produce nothing: they shorten the travel between nodes, which is the same saving a campsite makes by removing the trips to town. Neither kind changes what a stack sells for, so the entire effect lands on how much one route returns in an hour.
The mount comes with the training, not with the race
Forever uses the Burning Crusade riding model, so the mount is folded into the riding skill: you learn to ride and you are handed something to ride. The training is priced at 100 gold for the first tier and 1,000 for the top one, the first mount is included, and no race is quoted a different number for either. That is worth stating plainly, because the question gets asked in reverse: there is no race that arrives with a free mount and no race that pays less for one.
Plainsrunning is the only racial that stands in for part of what riding buys, and it buys a narrower thing. Speed that builds the longer you keep moving pays on long empty stretches and returns nothing on a loop with a stop every few seconds. Nothing has been published about how fast it reaches its top speed, whether it drops when you are hit, or which level it arrives at, so treat it as free travel on the roads rather than a discount on the cost of riding training.
Where the speed racials are worth most is the stretch before the first tier, when every minute of travel comes straight out of the route and there is no mount to make it up. That is also the bracket where income is thinnest, which is why a few percent of run speed reads better at level 20 than at 50. Weigh it against the rest of the climb in making gold from 1 to 60, and do not expect it to move the date you can afford the top tier.
Cultivation is smaller than it was
The Tauren herb racial has been changed so the duplicate plant only appears on herbs close to the character's own level. On the expensive high-end plants a low-level character can walk up to, nothing grows. That closes the one plan people were building around it, which was parking a fresh Tauren in a high-level zone and collecting whatever the herb list says is worth most. The exact level band has not been published anywhere, so check the behaviour on your own character rather than taking a figure from a guide.
The second limit is the clock. A player testing it on the beta reports the button greying out for an hour after use, and the tooltip does not show that at all. If it holds, the racial pays per hour rather than per node, so riding past 40 plants and riding past 4 produce the same duplicate, and no route plan changes the result. The half worth keeping is the reported reduction in failed gathering attempts, and that only reaches a character who actually trained the skill.
Read that way it is a small bonus on a loop you were already walking, not a reason to roll a character. What decides the evening is still a gathering profession's node list and how stripped the route is when you reach it, which comes down to how many gatherers share your copy rather than to anything on the racial tab.
What a race costs you
The expense side starts with faction, because faction decides who can hand you anything. Mail and trade are same-faction only, exactly as they were in 2004, and that sits on top of the region and playstyle split that already makes separate markets per playstyle out of one world. Skyborne characters of opposite factions share a language, which is a chat channel and not a money channel: nothing announced attaches trade, mail or a shared auction house to it.
The starting city is the second cost. Vendors and trainers charge less to characters who stand well with the faction running the city, and a character walking into a capital held by another race of the same faction arrives neutral there, so the counter is listed at full price. Learning a crafting trade away from home therefore costs more, and the gap repeats at every rank you travel back for, on foot until riding is affordable. It is a tiebreaker rather than an argument when choosing which trade to level.
Reagent access is the third, and it is the one that never appears on a racial tooltip. Several low-rank cooking ingredients come off creatures living in Alliance starting and levelling zones, so an Alliance cook walks into them while questing and a Horde cook either buys them or rides through hostile ground. The recipe costs the same points on both sides; the material behind it does not cost the same to obtain.
What nobody has published, and what we are not going to guess at:
- What any racial is worth per hour, in materials or in minutes saved.
- The level band Cultivation now checks, and the levels at which the Tauren racials unlock.
- Whether Plainsrunning drops when you are hit, and how fast it tops out.
- How large the home-city discount is at trainers and vendors, and at which ranks it applies.
Questions
Does any race get a free or cheaper mount?
No. Forever folds the mount into the riding skill, the first mount is included with the training, and the training is priced at 100 gold for the first tier and 1,000 for the top one regardless of what you are playing. Plainsrunning is the only racial that stands in for part of what riding buys, and it does not remove either bill.
Is Tauren still the gathering race?
Less than it was. Cultivation now only grows a duplicate on herbs close to the character's own level, so the high-value plants a low-level character could walk up to produce nothing, and testers report an hour between uses. What remains useful is the reported reduction in failed gathering attempts, which only helps a character that actually trained Herbalism.
Does my race change what I pay a trainer?
Indirectly. Trainers and vendors charge less to characters who stand well with the faction running the city, and your race decides which capital you start in good standing with. A character learning a trade in another city of the same faction arrives neutral there and pays the full price, every rank it comes back for.
Can a racial bonus pay for riding by itself?
Nobody can answer that with a number, because no per-hour figures for any Forever racial have been published by Blizzard or by anyone else, ourselves included. What can be said is the shape: the racials change how much one route returns and how long the travel between nodes takes, and the riding bill is identical for every race on the list.
