Guide - a material in short supply

Why Pristine Leather Is Scarce on the Beta

Skinners on the current beta build fill their bags and still cannot keep a leatherworker supplied with pristine leather. The shortage has causes worth naming, and it changes the arithmetic of crafting while levelling long before anybody sees a launch auction house.

Where the hides are supposed to come from

Pristine leather is not a node anybody walks up to. It comes off the same corpses every skinner already works, as the better of the outcomes on a hide, so the supply is tied to how many people are killing things in the right level band rather than to how many characters own the trade. On a test client almost nobody is in that band twice. Testers move through a zone once, file what broke and go on, and the kills that would produce the material are never repeated.

The rule that was supposed to widen the pipe is the one on skinning, where hides shared across a party let every member with the trade take materials from the same body. That rule has not settled. It was written to make gathering friendly to groups, and the beta discussion around it has gone both ways, which means the supply side of leather rests on something that may not look the same in the next build.

The other half of the problem is simply who is logged in. How thin beta populations run decides how many corpses get skinned at all, and a test realm has no levelling crowd to supply the market by accident. Free gathering from level 3 will put a skinner in most parties at launch; it has not done so on the beta, because the characters testing there were made for one purpose and deleted after it.

What that does to a levelling craft

A crafting recipe in the low and middle ranges is written around a material that is supposed to be common. Several hides go into one piece, and the piece itself is levelling gear: worn for a bracket, replaced by the next quest reward, worth almost nothing to the next person. When the input is bid up by the handful of buyers actually present, the whole craft inverts. The finished item is worth less than what went into it, and the gap is not closed by what a vendor pays out for the result.

Crafters respond the way they always do: they skip the bracket. Skill-ups get bought through whatever recipe is cheapest rather than whatever recipe is useful, and the bracket that wanted pristine leather gets crossed with something else entirely. That shifts the bill for skilling up from one material to another without lowering it much, and it leaves nobody making the armour the recipe was written for, which is why the finished pieces are as rare on the beta as the hides.

The same shortage reaches the other direction too. Orders placed with a crafter are only as cheap as the materials the customer can find, and when the customer cannot find them the order either carries the crafter's own sourcing cost or does not get placed. On the beta most of them do not get placed, which makes the order board look quiet for a reason that has nothing to do with the system itself.

What we are not going to print

We are not putting a price per hide on this site. The figure we watched moved between builds, and item values between beta builds change for reasons that have nothing to do with demand: a recipe gets rewritten, a drop table gets touched, a vendor gets a stock change. A number copied off a test auction house and carried to launch is worse than no number, because it reads like a measurement when it is a snapshot of a client that no longer exists.

A few things are genuinely unknown rather than withheld. Blizzard has not published the drop sources for the material, has not said whether the shared skinning rule ships in its current form, and has not described any conversion between the lower hides and the better ones. We have not seen a statement that the shortage is intended, and we have not seen one saying it will be fixed. Anything written here about launch is a reading of beta behaviour, not a plan anybody announced.

What carries over to launch and what does not

The part of this that survives a wipe is structural. Leather is produced by groups killing things, and it is consumed by 2 trades at once, which is why leatherworkers and tailors bidding together keeps the floor under hides higher than a single-buyer material. If the shared skinning rule ships, supply grows with party size and the early weeks look soft. If it is pulled, leather behaves like ore and herbs, and the beta shortage stops being an artefact of an empty test realm.

The part that does not survive is the scarcity itself. A live realm has a levelling crowd walking the same zones for weeks, and one shared sales channel collects everything they skin on the way. Our reading is that pristine leather is tight on the beta because the population is wrong for it, not because the material is rare by design, and that the recipes written around it will only be worth crafting once there are enough people levelling past the mobs that drop it.

Questions

Is the pristine leather shortage a bug?

Nothing we have seen says so. It behaves like a population effect: the material comes off kills in a level band that testers pass through once, and a test realm has no steady levelling crowd to restock it. Blizzard has not commented on the supply of this material either way, so we are not calling it a bug or a deliberate design choice.

Why does the page not give the price per hide?

Because it moved between the builds we watched, and beta prices are reset by patches rather than by demand. A figure taken off a test auction house and carried into a launch budget looks like a measurement when it is only a snapshot, so we describe the direction of the shortage instead.

Should I still level leatherworking around those recipes?

On the beta, most crafters skip the bracket and take skill-ups from whatever recipe the market can actually supply. At launch the answer likely changes, because a live levelling population produces hides as a by-product of ordinary play. Plan the trade around what is in the auction house that week rather than around a recipe list.

Does the shared skinning rule fix this?

It widens supply when people play in groups, since each skinner with the trade takes materials from the same body. It does nothing when almost nobody is levelling in that zone at all, which is the beta situation. Whether the rule ships in its current form has not been confirmed.
