Where Gold Gets Stuck on the Beta
For 3 days running the beta boards have carried the same 3 complaints: a bid goes in and the coin does not come back, a stacked lot sells in a shape the seller did not post, and a mailbox refuses to release what is attached to it. None of that money survives the wipe, so the useful question is not how to recover it but what each case tells you about the machinery you will be selling into later.
What the reports actually describe
The complaints fall into 3 shapes, and they are not the same fault. In the first, a bid is placed, the listing vanishes from the browse window on the next search, and the coin is missing from the bag with no mail to explain it. In the second, a stack is posted as a single lot and turns up in the results divided, with part of it sold and the rest unaccounted for in either the listings tab or the mailbox. In the third, a mail sits in the box and will not hand over the item, the attached coin, or both.
Some of this is almost certainly the auction house behaving as designed and being read as a bug. A bid removes coin from the bag the moment it is placed, a posting fee is taken up front, an outbid refund arrives by mail rather than appearing back in the bag, and an expired lot returns the same way. Anyone used to a modern client, where most of that is instant and visible, will read a normal holding state as money that has gone missing. The background to all of it sits in how bids and deposits are held.
The rest is harder to dismiss. A split stack that leaves no remainder anywhere is not a misread mechanic, and neither is a mail that stays frozen across a relog. On a test client those 2 things often sit next to a server that has just been restarted or rolled back, which is why a listings service going offline and a genuine item fault look identical from the browse window.
Where the coin is actually sitting
It helps to name the holding places, because every one of them looks like a loss from the bag side. A deposit sits with the auction house until the lot sells or expires. A bid sits with the auction house until somebody outbids you or the lot closes. A refund, a sale payout and a returned lot all sit in the mail queue, which is a separate system with its own delivery delay and its own expiry clock. A cash-on-delivery mail holds both the item and the payment until the receiving character pays.
That means a character can have a near-empty bag and still be solvent, with the balance spread across 3 queues that do not report to each other. On a live realm this resolves itself and nobody thinks about it. On a build that restarts often, a queue can stall while the bag total stays wrong for hours, and a player counting the bag concludes the gold is gone.
Before you report anything, check all 3 places: the listings tab, the bids tab, and the mailbox including anything marked for return. If you were moving money between your own characters when it stalled, the handling that applies is the same one covered in moving coin between your own characters, and a cash-on-delivery mail is the worst instrument to be holding when a realm goes down.
What we do not know about these faults
We have not seen an official statement on any of the 3 cases. We do not know whether the split-stack reports describe one fault or several, whether the stalled mail is a delivery problem or a display problem that clears on its own, or whether a restart returns the held coin. We also do not know how many players are affected, and we are not going to publish a count we cannot verify from the board threads.
What we can say is narrower. The reports have been consistent across 3 days rather than appearing once and stopping, and they come from players describing different actions, which argues against a single bad session. Nothing in them points at a change in how the auction house is meant to work, and nothing we have read suggests the behaviour is intended. Treat all of that as a reading of forum posts, not as confirmed information.
What is worth doing before the wipe
Start from the part that is settled: none of this money travels. The test realm is cleared before launch, so a stuck bid and a frozen mail cost you test time and nothing else. That is the whole case against chasing it, and it is the same reasoning laid out in what the beta reset erases. Spending an evening trying to recover a sum that is scheduled for deletion is the one clearly wrong response.
The useful response is a report that somebody can act on. Write down the exact sequence: what was posted or bid, from which character, in which window, what the mailbox showed before and after, and whether a relog or a realm restart changed anything. A single report with steps that reproduce is worth more than several that say the gold vanished. Use the in-game tool, because it attaches the realm and build you were on, which a forum post does not.
For your own testing, keep the coin liquid. Do not park a balance in listings overnight, avoid cash-on-delivery for handoffs between characters you control, and post in shapes you are willing to lose while the split-stack reports are open. If you are testing a market rather than a mechanic, the behaviour you measure now may be the client's and not the economy's, which is a different thing from what gold trades for elsewhere.
Questions
Does gold stuck in a beta mailbox carry over to launch?
No. The test realm is wiped before the live start, and that applies to balances in bags, listings, deposits and mail alike. A stuck mail is not a special case that gets preserved; it disappears with everything else on the character.
Is a held deposit or a missing bid a bug?
Usually not. A posting fee is taken when the lot goes up, a bid leaves the bag the moment it is placed, and refunds and expired lots come back through the mail rather than straight into the bag. Check the bids tab and the mailbox before treating it as a fault.
Should I report every stuck lot I see?
Report the ones you can describe step by step. The in-game tool records the build and realm you were on, which a board post does not, and one report that reproduces is more useful than several that only say the coin went missing.
Will there be compensation for gold lost on the beta?
We have seen nothing said about it either way. Since the realm is cleared regardless, compensation on a test client would have no practical effect on a live balance, but we are not going to present that reasoning as an official answer.
